Mining and Exploration in Turkey in 2000’s

Mining in Turkey is driven by numerous small-to-medium sized mining and exploration firms as well as several large local and international groups working medium-to-large base and precious metal deposits.

Since the early 2000’s, a large number of exploration and mining licenses were granted to new entrants to the Turkish mining sector. The total number of licenses held in Turkey reached 45,900 in 2008.

This rapid increase in exploration activity was motivated mainly by the metal price boom caused by the surge in Chinese demand for all metal products that started in early 2000’s.

Impact of the Global Financial Crisis in 2008

As was the case around the world, mineral exploration activity in Turkey subsided after the global financial crisis in 2008.

The post-2008 period, marked by historically low metal prices, led to a major slowdown in mining investments in Turkey. Many mining entrepreneurs had to abandon their licenses. New license applications decreased significantly.

As a result, the total number of valid mining and exploration licenses came down to 17,036 in September 2018.

Mining Investment Opportunities in Turkey – Post-Crisis

One positive outcome of this particular phase in the Turkish mining sector was that the sector emerged with a great amount of new geological exploration data. Mining entrepreneurship capacity was enhanced. A number of mining projects at various stages of exploration and feasibility, which stood the test of low metal prices, were developed.

Especially in the time period since 2016, the rising metal prices trend made the economics of several such projects once again eligible for further investment.

Today; a number of exploration and operating license sites, where geological or mining works indicated critical geological mass, stand out as major mining investment opportunities.
